Public education campaign about faecal contamination

  • Storyboard
  • Website

When citizens are more informed about the risks associated with leaving pet waste behind and letting their dog off-leash, the whole community can work together to make Pippy Park waterways safe. Check out our storyboard here!

Frequent restocking of waste bags

  • More sites around the park trail which provide access to dog poop bags
  • Check and restock poop bag dispensers periodically
  • Frequent checking and emptying of disposal bins

These actions will make it easier and more convenient for park users to pick up after their pet!

Focus on Allandale Road trail

  • Place storyboard at the beginning of the trail
  • Additional disposal bins along trail

Our research clarified that this trail is very popular with pet owners, and also that it experiences the most poop left behind out of all the trails we surveyed. Focusing our outreach program on this trail could make a big difference on water quality downstream.

Future research

  • Further studies are required to better understand the sources and locations of faecal contamination in Pippy Park (e.g. effects of elevation, weather, season)
  • More frequent sampling and re-sampling of representative locations
  • Testing of sediment from streams and ponds

With more knowledge about what is causing faecal contamination in Pippy Park, we'll be able to focus our resources and efforts towards the appropriate target.

Recommendations

Our research suggests that pet waste could be one of the sources contaminating local water bodies in Pippy Park. We have several recommendations which we think will help improve this problem:
